@rentech68 which british brand in your opinion is wholly british owned? LR and jaguar are now in a better position than they were in Ford's hands who basically used them like a spare parts bin. used up all the technology and when they found they had no use they sold it. have a read about the TATA group and probably you might change your opinion. TATA motors is just a part of a multibillion dollar group.

I had nissan terrano with 220,000 miles on it which I mistaken as km. I drove extra 15000 miles and I never had any problem. It used to start perfectly in the morning, never flooded and never stopped ever driving for 3 hours continuously at 120 km per hour. I love Nissan and I will buy Nissan in future.

Land Rover is Owned by a Indian Company called TATA Motors, And with all honesty that's about when they started to have some serious trouble , Ounce considered one of the best off road vehicles. The X-trail is made in Japan , with some assembly in other countries.
We have recently experienced a REAL off road challenge in PERU with a mixture of Rocky Beaches , Swamps , Jungles and Snow covered Mountains and while the Land Rover didn't do so well at all , Jeep did a little better , X-trail Won.

Nissan has the PATROL which is the only 4X4 car in the world that is capable of inclining a dessert at an angle exceeding 45 degrees. Its all about practicality. I have the nissan xtrail 2.5 gasoline and Im very proud of it. For luxury you can go for german cars simple as that.

I must say I do think this is a poor comparison, I have just bought an X-Trail and what a fantastic car, I would never ever give the freelander even a second thought, sorry 5th gear no comparison!!
