Some 75,000 years ago a super-eruption from the site of Lake Toba in Sumatra blasted out more than two hundred cubic miles of ash over an area of over a million square miles. This program investigates the devastating aftermath of the most powerful volcano of the last twenty-five million years - including the theory that it triggered a human genetic bottleneck leaving a tiny band, as low as a few thousand survivors to preserve the human race - and looks at the threat of super-volcanoes in the 21st century.

  • @Gforcebond sorta like "Imagine" John Lennon.

  • No offence, but Mr. Disotell definitely doesn't look like a scientist :D

  • what is a boarder? the biggest 'what' i've ever wonderd is how do we keep starving ppl where they are? why dont they move?????????????...because of borders. we have enuff food to feed the planet 3 times over, if only they had enuff money to buy it. cus they would rather see it rot they give it away for free. props for china, think how many they have to feed.

  • The Neanderthals would have survived this event as well. I wonder how many of them would have been left assuming that they had migrated out of Africa by that time? Curious as it appears that most if not all of our species would have died outside of the African continent.. Maybe the Neanderthals were better suited to deal with the volcanic winter in Europe at that time.

  • Imagine if the whole world worked together as one instead of countries going to war with each other....Something to think about.

  • It's amazing if u think about it. Something that could cause almost the extinction of the human race ends up being one of the things that makes us what we are today. it forced the rest of the human population to work together creating larger societies instead of just a band of people working together. Just amazing if u think about it. Sometimes the bad can be turned into the good. History always has a way of repeating itself too. Something we can learn from this one day.
