On August 10th, 2007 we witnessed a classic shelf cloud formation move over Craney Island across the Elizabeth River into Norfolk, Va. This storm was part of a system that created numerous severe thunderstorm warnings across southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. These storms brought and end to a week that saw 5 straight days of heat warnings with heat indexes topping 105F degrees every afternoon. Below are some images and a video clip of the storm system that was pushed ahead of a cold front that broke this oppressive heat.

  • WHAT a sky! Looks like it wants to vomit. Great footage!

  • What is a scud cloud? I know just about every storm cloud (including some wierd ones like beaver tail something like that).

  • american weather forcasts are very accurate

  • I remember this day it was scary my grandad and me hid in the basement

  • Shelf clouds are associated with descending cold air, wall clouds are associated with rising air and updrafts, that's why wall clouds can often spawn tornadoes

  • A gustnado looks like a tornado, but it actually has more in common with a dust devil. They can form when a strong updraft begins to rotate, but doesn't connect with the cloud base. Can still produce impressive winds, but not as powerful as a true tornado can get

  • i enjoyed that. i love nature's weather

  • Shelf Cloud ?!? Dont you mean Wall Cloud ? Or is there a difference here ?
