Genesis as parallel to 2001 is an awkward mess, misses a lot. Square peg in round hole. Hermetic alchemy is a more accurate basis of comparison. There is much more of mortar & pestle in this than there is adam & eve. The Monolith as the "black stone of transformation" or "Great Work" also beats "the symbol of satan's temptation" over the head with a bone club and stomps on it. (quickly google searches "Stanley Kubrick alchemy" to check. Yep, the other alchemists agree.) It's evolutionary.
