Here it is folks, my first official lesson. It's a bit advanced but pretty easy to follow along with. Just practice slow and work on accuracy. You'll build up your speed as your fingers get used to the pattern.
It's what I call a 4 over 3 scale pattern. 4 notes on 1 string and 3 on the other to make 7 notes in the scale. It's a very efficient way of moving scales up and down.
Here I'm applying it in a very "Yngwie" (ish) style in A harmonic minor. It can be used in any mode and with any pattern. I'll have a lot of examples of this in the members only section, along with different pattern types.

There will be a pile of lessons for you beginners soon enough. Some of it might seem ridiculously simple to the more advanced players, but it's geared specifically for people just starting and with little or no experience.

  • Jeff thanks for the excellent video. I think your videos have helped me more than any others in my efforts to learn shredding technique. Basementrockstar is a great name for guys like us...your students I mean.

  • @naniho Thanks! I'm working hard to provide great lessons and so it's nice to hear that some people are benefiting from them. In about 3 weeks my basement renovations will be done and I can get back into making more lessons. I've been writing out TONS of stuff for you guys. basementrockstar(dot)com is my official lesson site. (also under construction) but feel free to check it out. It's a work in progress... Jeff

  • Hey great playing/teaching! I just wanted to ask how you achieved that tone and what sort of equipment you are running through... Thanks! :)

  • @Adip12321 Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you're enjoying the lessons. There will be a lot more once my basement renovations are done.

For these first videos I play into a Line 6 TonePort with PodFarm2 using a Soldano SLO 100 head with a bit of chorus/delay to get a good stereo spread This runs into Protools (with the vocals) and out thru a passive attenuator directly into my camera. I don't do any post other than video editing. The next round of videos will be done with my Eleven Rack

  • you pick all the notes while playing slow, but are mixing hammer on and pull off in the faster speed... can you tell me wich are picked and wich are pull offs?

  • @carnalpassion1 if you watch it from the 1:06 mark ("a little bit faster") you can see it better.

I don't pay that much attention to what I'm picking, I just do what feels right at the time.

I usually start a descending run with a downstroke pull-off (rather than upstroke alternate picking) pick the middle section and end the pattern with a pull off then start the octave the same way. Don't focus on your picking that much. just play what feels right and gets the results you want.
