Gateway to the Savage Frontier
-we were sent to Nesme to find a particular someone. We found him + killed him and his henchmen...My magic user went on a rampage with his spells. First a lighting bolt takes out half the enemy troops, then some magic missles, a stinking cloud, and a mirror image just for kicks.

  • I think this is my favorite Goldbox game. Well-paced un-convoluted plot, great level designs, and interface refinements that eliminate much of the tedium inherent in the earlier titles. Final foozle is just brutal though. I don't think that fight can actually be won.

  • @PlayingWithHistory Well the end of Gateway to the Savage Frontier is very similar to the end of the movie "Indiana Jones / Raiders of the Lost Ark" in that the monsters rather than the nazi's get zapped in the head. Unless you are refering to a Dave's challenge "bonus" end to the game after the main plot.

  • @sokolkeep I'm referring to the actual fight with Vaalgamon and his Shambling Mounds. I can manage to take the Mounds down with the defoliation wand, but Vaalgamon is just too strong. Impossible to hit, immune to magic... I tried several times, but could never beat him in a stand up fight. At a point when it's obvious I've lost the fight, I have one of the characters who are still standing run to the exit. That triggers the ending, but running away still feels like a cheap way to win.

  • @PlayingWithHistory Strange. I didn't know that running away could still trigger the end sequence. Well I'm playing through the game again so I'll try to post a video.

  • @sokolkeep You've actually beaten Vaalgamon!? Impressive! A video would of that would indeed be cool. Actually, while we're on the subject, I can't beat the final battle(s) in Treasures either. In fact, I find it even harder. The penultimate fight is three groups consisting of Masters, Spies, and Mages. No matter what I've tried, I can't disrupt enough of those spell casters before my entire party eventually gets held and slaughtered. I've got 2 MUs in my party. Maybe I need a third.

  • @PlayingWithHistory I haven't played Treasures in a very long time so not sure If I can be much help there. Perhaps cast haste, & have some dispel magic spells around in case someone gets held.

  • @sokolkeep I loved/love all of the "Gold Box" games, too! This game & Treasures I think would make a good introduction to the series for someone who's relatively new to retrogaming, though, because:

    a) VGA graphics & SoundBlaster soundcard support;

    b)self-contained "mini" series within the larger Gold Box series;

    c)available in several CD-ROM compilations (both from WizardWorks & Interplay), so it's not that hard to find a used legal copy; and

    d)fewer installation glitches than with POR.

  • I just bought this game in the box and I'm enjoying it. Now if only I could rip the XMI file from the game...

  • nevermind, your party is made up of 4 guys....more xp

  • how to get lighting bolt so early in the game...other than fighting monsters in the wilderness for a long time?
