how did you manage to get the game to run so quickly?

First you mount the game in DOSBOX. In default mode, the CPU cycles will be set at 3000. This is way to slow. You want to put them on 5000 to get the game to run at normal speed. You can do this by pressing CTRL-F12 four times (each time CPU cycles increase by 500) after you start the game, but right before you actually start playing. Enjoy!
