(email: bma@bma.dmb.amsterdam.nl ) Chantez à Dieu chanson nouvelle, Chantez, ô terre universelle, Chantez, et son Nom bénissez.
Sing a new song to God
Sing, oh all the earth,
Sing and bless his name Et de jour en jour annoncez Sa délivrance solennelle.
and from day to day tell of
his great salvation

Translator's note
My translation here is fairly literal based on the French version chosen by Sweelinck, and is just for information.
The word Solennelle has puzzled me, since its normal meanings are fairly diverse: "publically observed", "solemn", "ceremonious", "for great occasions", even
"annual". Moreover the other French versions of the psalm do not include the word "Solennelle" and it does not appear in other versions of the psalm in other languages that I have found. I therefore opted for "great salvation", since the other renditions simply don't fit the context. Purists may query my pronunciation of the word "Solennelle", which would be "solanel" in modern French. The pronunciation in Sweelinck's day may have been as I have sung it, but I won't force the issue!

  • A many-personned God. Impressive, but tuning needs tweaking nonetheless.
