This is a test using my Minelab E-Trac metal detector on some silver coins. I am using a hammered penny, George IV half crown and a Victoria Crown which is a big silver weighing 1ounce. When the ground setting is set to neutral all the coins are picked up except the large Victoria Crown It will only be picked up in neutral if you make the coin look smaller to the coil by turning it sideways on as shown in the video. The E-Trac when in neutral finds the large silver crown hard to recognise, it finds it hard to pick up it just nulls. However, when the ground setting is changed to difficult, the coil picks the coin up fine. It can and will be picked up using any other settings ie full sensitivity or auto set very low as long as the ground is set to difficult but NOT in NEUTRAL.
Thank you for watching this video.
Easy answer: Keep it on the "Difficult" setting then :-) Oh and take it out of "Auto" for a start - What other settings you have, can you list them?

You should move the coins away from the coil when you start the machine. The detection field goes up as far as it goes down. This can screw up you test results. Great video and even better info...

the factory program for coins notches out large silver (don't know why) go to menu> discrimination> edit & open up the top right hand corner of your discrimination.

Wow...this is excellent information for ETrac owners. I was having a heck of a time getting even 90% silver halves to chirp (FE=5/6) and got almost nothing on silver dollars with my air tests (FE=1). I was indeed in Normal ground. I will remember this tip when seeking silver.
Thanks for the test!

I have a chinese cheapo that will not detect bullion oz. silver coin even if you touched coil with it. Even Tesoro topline will pick small 800 Ag coin further from coil then a large pure bullion coin. Silver is a tricky metal;).
