EU Welcomes U.S. EPA Ruling on Climate Change

On December 8th, Swedens Chief Climate Negotiator, Anders Turesson, accepted the EPA ruling which clears the way for regulation of greenhouse gases without new laws passed by Congress.

[Artur Runge-Metzger, European Commission Chief Climate Negotiator]:
"On the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) issue that CO2 can be regulated by the EPA, I think that's certainly welcome because it means that there is another possible instrument or let's say another possible avenue the administration could use."

The United States will pledge in Copenhagen to cut its greenhouse gas emissions roughly 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020, a drop of about 3 percent below the 1990 benchmark year used in U.N. treaties.

But Turesson thought that the U.S. must do more to cut gas emissions.

The 17 percent are insufficient and we hope that more will come out of that. In addition, yes, we would like to see offsets in addition to the 17 percent...They will have to make much more after 2020 if they cannot do more than 17 percent until 2020.

President Barack Obama is expected to attend the closing of the Copenhagen climate summit.
