I wanted to evaluate whether 123D Catch would work better from photographs or video imagery. To find out, I took a series of photographs as well as a video of an abandoned house near my neighborhood. Both were taken with the same Canon digital camera.

The video was standard definition (640 x 480 pixels), about a minute in length. I grabbed 28 frames from this video and fed them into Catch, producing the animation seen in the first half of the video.

The photographs were considerably higher resolution (3456 x 2592 pixels). I took six from around the front of the house, a smaller angle of field than the video covered. These six were also assembled via Catch.

Generally, I'm pretty happy with the result of both methods. The photographs obviously produce a model with more visual detail, but the disadvantage is that I only have those six sources. With the video, if I decide I need more source images of a certain region I can extract additional frames. There are also higher definition cameras that will capture more detail.
