Type XXI and its descendants, thanks to their shapes, are almost invisible to the sonar from the frontal aspect; they were designed to sneak stealthily past an escort screen and sink merchant ships; nuclear submarines on the other hand-like the Ohio or Typhoon classes trade their stealthiness for tonnage-they carry very heavy weapons-LRBMs and/or cruise missiles.. which the former designs would have to haul on special platforms(like a German V2 concept from near-the-end of WWII)

That's mostly the reason why subs similar to those "Type XXIs" are still in service in navies all around the world(called "Attack submarines" vs teh larger "ballistic missile submarine" or "Underwater SLBM Cruisers")
