  • the word "aliyah" means "going up, or ascending to G-d". the same word is used when a jewish person returns to live in the land of israel. here, it refers to "being called to the torah"...an honor given to jewish people over the age of barmitzvah, usually 13. being "called to the torah" has very deep significance and meaning. in traditional times, the person called would actually chant the torah portion. today, they usually just sing the blessings.

  • thank you Josh. So, when they talk about a wave of Aliyah, it's a wave of Jews 'returning' to Israel? Cheers.

Depending on the day, there is a various number of alijahs. In ancient times, the Kohanim, the priests, made the ceremonies in the temple of salomo. The Levi helped them. So its kinda like a hierarchy. So today, all descendants of Kohanim or Levis get the honor of getting the first or second alijah.

  • You sound like billy mays

  • @joshster89 The Orthodox Ashkenazim use a different pronounciation than the Sefardim and Mizrachim.

  • shalom to all.

  • ok, what is the difference between the 1st, 2nd and the 3rd aliyah that the Rabbi was talking about? I am not Jewish, but I am just curious..

  • @DrXoz Judaism believes Muslims will (Like really religious ones [both Muslims and Jews]) go to heaven, and Islam teaches all believers (especially Muslims and Jews).
