"Fewer than three-quarters of Canadians believe in a god, suggests a new Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey.

"Religion in Canada today is not a particularly divisive subject and tolerance levels for different beliefs are high," said Harris-Decima president Bruce Anderson.

"This is evident in the fact that one in four people feel comfortable saying they do not believe in a god."

The poll found 72% of respondents said they believed in a god, while 23% said they did not believe in any god. Six per cent did not offer an opinion.

Results may not total 100% because of rounding."

  • Yep, we still have a majority of believers, but I wouldn't be so hard on them if I were you. Very few of them cheat, but Christian Right men like to hang out at truck stops for some reason.

  • The beauty is that the 6% who won't say are probably atheists too, they're just not comfortable telling a pollster because they're still working through the personal and social implications of that choice.

Now, it's up to "open" atheists to get those 23% to start openly discussing their atheism, and more importantly calling themselves "atheists", without hesitation or reservation. When that happens, we'll see some real positive change in secularising our country.

  • We are pretty much a secular country with a bunch of loud whining conservative Christians who have deluded themselves that this is a Christian country.

I recently got kicked off the Blogging Tories forum because of my atheistic viewpoints:)

  • maybe some day we'll be the majority :D

  • I think nearly all religious people in canada live in small towns in rural areas. In Toronto and Vancouver a large majority of the people I knew were atheist or agnostic, there are a few old catholics in Montreal, but in most big cities in Canada Christianity is pretty much dead.

  • @dave19941000 they were all cults at one point in time. a religion just skipped over the mass suicide part(ok fine, not all cults commit mass suicide but ill say it anyways) and grew to the point where they gained acceptance.

  • I think religion in Canada is similar to how it is here in Australia, of course we have our weirdos but overall better than the US which has nutbag, fundy, gay bashing republicans

  • @baconeater As much as I hate to disagree, our country does have a firm basis in Christian values. You find it everywhere once you begin to study law. This is because of our British heritage. Since we separated, we've been moving further and further into secularism, which is just fantastic.

  • @xxsaltybeastxx Yeah, religion makes people do terrible things.

  • Well that leaves 77% who are delusional!

  • @jacobins3000 i come from a very small town in Québec, Canada and i will say that.. I know only 1 family who keep strong believe in god "like the flanders", now the only remaining Christians are the older but they are starting to die...

In my small rural town of 6000 residents; "so it should be a Christians stronghold" now it's the believers kids who get picked on because their parents have brainwashed them...

  • @samehsh80 You may not be "brianwashed", but you are brainwashed.

  • @KatictheCanuck Christianiny was a cult when it was founded.

  • @jacobins3000 I live in the Canadian countryside and I can tell you, the christians are not that religious here. At the most 1 in 20 christians will go to church once a MONTH, fom what I've seen of pur great country (Quebec and Ontario, the "real" Canada) those that are religious don't practice that mush, and the majority of our atheists (I am one :) are under the age of 30, so I think by the end of my lifetime Canada will be overwelmingly atheists, and still doing better then the US.
