I tool a large lighter flint, which is composed of a metal called Ferrocerium and hooked it up to my little arc machine to see what it would do. It didn't blow up, as I expected, but produced a blinding light comparable to a carbon arc. No doubt having vaporized rare-earth metals in the air isn't great, but since I never have seen anyone else do this yet, I figured what the hell. If you don't want to watch 5 minutes of a sustained arc, then I suggest you move on to something else.
