Anatol Kagan (1913 - 2009) - Berlin University (1936); Dip.TRP. (Melbourne), M.A.P.I., F.R.A.I.A. Anatol Kagan was one of 233 architects from around the world, who submitted designs to the competition in 1955 for a national opera house in Sydney. Anatol corresponded with his mentor, Walter Gropius, about the competition challenges; and wrote to conductor, Bruno Walter, to discuss acoustics. While his building didn't win, Anatol's modernist approach offered a superior internal arrangement with respect to the back-to-back placement of the theatres and the sightlines for audiences. The clean lines of his building offered sculpted facades, trees and other details that contrast with Utzon's shell design for a building that remains severely compromised internally.
