"Activists that are trying to stop mountain top removal coal mining in Appalachia are angry with Nike's (NYSE:NKE) promotional ad for a new West Virginia football uniform that is designed as a tribute to the 29 victims of the Upper Big Branch mine explosion.
The issue that activists have is with the image of a flat, treeless mountaintop, the sound of an explosion and the image of falling rock that is on the uniform. According to those opposed, the ad appears to be an endorsement of the controversial form of strip mining and misses a key point about the Massey Energy's (NYSE:MEE) Upper Big Branch explosion, which was that the mine that exploded was an underground operation.
Nike did not immediately return telephone and e-mail messages.

Fuck the activist, had one stand in front of my truck to try to stop me from going to work about 3 months ago.
Hemp bracelets, hemp necklaces, and a Cal shirt on.Couldn't run him over cause of all the cameras around, but he couldn't hold off the West Virginia DPS when they grabbed his ass. Hope the got corn-holed in southern regional.
Stay out of WV. the vast majority of us are great shots.

The folks who were angry about this had no problem with the uniforms. They were upset about the fact that, in the original ad, a Mountaineer was standing in a devastated, flat MTR site. Can I hear it for the irony? The Upper Big Branch miners died underground, the first ad didn't pay tribute to them at all. Now changing the uniforms for the backyard brawl, that's high class, but you can't take the most divisive issue in WV & throw their favorite team in the middle of it.
