Dr Brian tries the organ for http://www.helenbamber.org charity recital in May.

For details of coming to hear him in concert see http://www.hammerwood.mistral.co.uk/concerts.htm The site says "BY PRIVATE INVITATION" - you simply have to ask to be invited! So please ask . . . and please come!

The organ here served a dozen years at Londonderry Cathedral and upon arriving at Hammerwood David Pinnegar enlarged it to 5 manuals giving it some outrageous French trumpets and the only 64ft/128ft "Self Destruct" stop in Europe. It is installed in a country house which often hosts concerts specifically to raise interest in the organ and its repertoire as a result of witnessing an organ being bulldozed inside a building being demolished: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MW1oOTiFoOk

  • I hate this instrument; It just slams your head around. I've seen it on YouTube so many times. Its MIDI'd to death. I think the only person who really knows how to play it is Hugh Potton. Of course, Ton Koopman would love it and get wild and crazy on it as he did on the Freiburg.

  • @homoignobilis Try "Ben Scott Pachelbel" for something very different and "Ben Scott Corrette" . . .

  • The organist is ok but the organ is terrible

  • Yuck! The organ is ugly, it looks messy with all those MIDI expander boxes and most important: it sounds awful. It's a shame they call monster like this a organ!! On the other hand, the organist seems just nice.. :)

  • @Musicoholist You might enjoy the recent recordings "Ben Scott - Corrette Grand Jeu avec Tonnerre" and associated videos

  • @16enChamade I get very fed up by people commenting badly about an informal snapshot video recorded with all the stops out with a camcorder audio that cannot cope and people don't have the discernment to look at good recordings of good playing with good registration and comment positively where good comment is due. Have a look at "Ben Scott - Corrette Grand Jeu avec Tonnerre" where you will be able to comment objectively rather than subjectively.

  • @joeyboi87 Very much on account of the recording. Have a look at the new Ben Scott videos which you might enjoy.

  • @16enChamade In view of your username you might enjoy "Ben Scott - Corrette Grand Jeu avec Tonnerre"

  • well I certainly can agree with that...it sounds absolutely vulger to say the least ....his playing however is nice..except for the 32ft which is not at all necessary for this piece

  • @16enChamade Search "French Baroque Masterclass Grand Jeu" and comment there on whether the organ is horrible. This recording is bad on account of the automatic volume control of the camera being overloaded: it's not the organ. Listen to "Hugh Potton Reubke" and "Jeremy Filsell Hollins" and you'll here what this instrument is really made of . . . Please do feel free to comment there about how bad you feel the organ is. It's amazing the number of people who are negative who cannot be positive.

  • @homoignobilis One of my favourite recordings of Reubke is of Hugh playing this instrument. There are a lot of stops to choose from and the art is knowing which to use. That's not a reflection of the instrument, which is intended to be versatile, but of the wisdom of the player. Of course proper recordings help rather than camera recordings such as this - and this is part of the "slam your head around" perception. Search "jcm Reger" and "Filsell BWV 685" to hear what this instrument is made of.
