Video and sound installation (work in progress)
The voice that had been intentionally slowed down is the voice of Esther Goldstein, the artist's grandmother, taken from her testimony at the Eichmann Trial.
This installation is an evolutionary project that has been growing and branching out since its beginning about 3 years ago. It started with positioning a speaker that played the slowed down soundtrack against a window. The window vibrated as response to the speaker. The vibration met the soundtrack, adding a layer to it. A soundtrack that consists of both sounds has now been recorded. This soundtrack formed the basis for another installation, in which it was played by a speaker placed in a large plastic garbage bag which rustled to the sound.
In the current installation, a fluttering sheet of paper, an image of a sentimental pencil printed on it, has been added to the speaker. The soundtrack consists of Esther Goldstein's slowed down voice, supplemented by the vibrating window, the rustling garbage bag, the fluttering leaf of paper and the compulsive pencil.
A previous phase of the current evolution can be seen in the video.
The original sentence plucked out of the full testimony is: "The S.S. man came, took the little girl and gave her to my mother... and the boy also ... he took."
