For Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1966 the influence of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and Eric Dolphy are transparent. John Hicks was always on top of his game and this performance was no different. Gilmore, with the help of Blakey, was able to take his tenor sound up to new heights as Blakey cued Hicks and Morgan to change key structures. Lee Morgan was at the peak of his creativity driven only the way Blakey can do. Egyptian is performed here like no other.

I am so glad that so many people have hunted this down. I hope that fans take the time to check out the other clips on my channel. As well as more from this concert, there is stuff from Monk, Dizzy, Mies, Ornette, as well as some great British jazz from Victor ~Feldman, Bill LeSage and Tubby Hayes.
