  • You don't need the crochet style hooks to do this knitting...

    Regular needles work fine.

  • @lori1551 You actually do. I've tried the regular needles and the thread will slip without the hook to hold it.

  • @kittyninha Well I have been knitting without hooks for the past 2 days... Andrea Wong sells DVD's and a book and does not use the hooks and she is the expert. Maybe it is how you are doing it?

  • @lori1551 And you have been knitting "portuguese style"? Anyways, all I can tell you is, the way I learned to knit, you cannot do it with regular knitting needles. As for experts, for me my granny is the best expert ever :)

  • @kittyninha I wasn't going to bother replying but decided I would... Have a look at the video from knitting daily #307.... It shows you Portuguese knitting without the hook... I agree with you that your Grandmother did it with hooks. There are so many ways to knit and none are right or wrong. I was just trying to be helpful to you to let you know there are other ways...

  • @lori1551 My point exactly. I didn't even know we knitted differently from the rest of the world until someone in a forum brought it to my attention. But what I'm trying to say is that it is very hard to hold the yarn without a hook, if you knit exactly how I learned. Of course it can be done, I've managed to do it, but it's not comfortable at all and the yarn will slip very often. Thanks for the info, though!

  • I forgot to mention that there is a method now called 'Knooking' and it's knitting with a crochet hook in the right hand.

There are some YouTube videos - Search for 'Knooking'

    You'll see what I mean.

  • Lots of different methods - just like different styles of cooking, IMNSHO. ;-)

No such thing as Right or Wrong as long as you get the knitting done.

I'm going to give your method a try - I throw with my right, holding the yarn with my index finger and thumb. I've tried left hand and felt discombobulated. LOL

  • Are you tensioning with your neck?

  • Very hard to see what is going on in this video--it would have helped to focus the camera a bit more and to use a yarn color that contrasts with color of needles!

  • I recently learned how to knit peruvian, this looks very similar

  • @kittyninha HI Kitty, where could I get a set of these needles!? I would really like to try them out.

  • I thought those Portuguese type needles had crochet hook at one end and point like regular knitting needle at the other end? what you do with both ends is mystery to me,ebay I just saw some in bamboo=crochet hook one end , knitting needle point other end, i might go buy some what the hay! at worse can use as cable needle or picking up stitches

  • That seems like a much smoother experience.

  • My sister in law was Portuguese and this is not the way she taught me. She did not use the hook and said that the only ones she knows who do use it are tight knitters. Her female relatives have knitted professionally for years and her aunt worked for a designer in Lisbon over 25 years, so guess like in any other country, there are different styles to choose from.

  • I didn't know these tunisian/afghan hooks could be used for knitting. I'm just going hog wild discovering the various knitting methods that I didn't even know existed.
