The Hutchinson House located on Edisto Island, SC is the oldest house on the island identified with the black community after the Civil War. The house was built in 1885 by Henry Hutchinson (born 1860); a freed slave on the island. Mr. Hutchinson built this house for his bride Rosa Swinton and resided here until his death in 1940. Visiting this house you get a strong sense of pride even when viewing it in it's dilapidated state. One cannot imagine the trials and tribulations Mr. Hutchinson had to go through in slavery times - only to overcome them and live his life as intended. It's an awesome site to see this house that this clearly proud man created from nothing for his family. Hopefully, in time something will be done to stabilize and restore the home to it's former glory. I know, as of now, the family has no intentions of saving the house. It truly is a shame because our African American history is just as important to preserve for future generations. Maybe the family will realize what an important property they have and have a change of heart.
@TheMrpanthersman13 thanks for the concern but I actually had gained permission from someone who was part of the family who lived right near the house before i ever went inside of it.
