Сюжет: Фильм повествует о враче-психиаторе Смирнове (Олег Янковский), который приехав из Москвы чтобы заменить уходящего на пенсию доктора Александра Егоровича (Армен Джигарханян) встречает в больнице психически больного пациента Тимофеева (Малколм Мак-Дауэлл), считавшего себя убийцей российских императоров Александра II и Николая II. Новый врач беседует со Смирновым, который рассказывает ему о подробностях убийств царственных персон от лица народовольца Игнатия Гриневицкого, казнившего Александра Второго и чекиста Якова Юровского, организовавшего расстрел царской семьи. Пытаясь найти истоки болезни и способ ее лечения, Смирнов сам вживается в роль Николая II, выезжает в Свердловск на место расстрела царской семьи и неожиданно умирает в привокзальной гостинице.

Story: A patient in a modern day mental institution believes that he is the man who assassinated Tsar Alexander in 1881 and Tsar Nicolas II in 1918. He and his doctor soon slip out of reality and are forced to relive the events of 1918 in order to break the spell.

This was not a murder. This was an execution. But I agree to name this execution as murder, if you agree that an execution of Saddam Husein was a murder.

I can't agree with you more ksendzsurala.
It was Execution for Nicholas and possibly Alexendera but "Murder" for Olga, Tatiana,
Maria, Anstasia and Alexis.
Also Murder for the servents, chef and Dr.Botkin.
Dispite the mistake that Nicholas had made, I still think it was Wrong to
execute Nicholas without a fair trial without him being there.
"This just proves that some people can be so heartless".

@muppetgirl101 Unfortunately, a court was not. However, a sentence was ratified by bolshevist government in Moscow, therefore this was not simply the mob law of local soviet government (of Ural oblast). I am not sure that Moscow ordered to execute also children and servants of Tsar. Servants were shot up as undesirable witnesses, children must were be executed, not to get in the hands of enemies of Soviet power.

Ekaterinburg was surrounded by the White troops (including monarchists) and the Czechoslovakian military occupants and there was a danger, that tsar's family will be exempt. During a war-time all sides of conflict are often forced to accept such decisions which are not possible in a peace-time.

It not soviet power began civil war, but the mutinous Czechoslovakian military corps which was must abandon Russia, to return through Vladivostok to motherland, but instead this - began war against Russia, hit below the belt in revolutionary Russia, seized the more than 7 thousand kilometres of railway from Ural to Vladivostok and engaged all opposition of soviet power to civil war.

By the initiators of this villainous armed revolt there were leaders of the Entente, having for an object elimination of Soviet power (which was a single legal power on territory of country). Blood of tsar's family and 10 millions victims of civil war in Russia on their hands.
