Why the scaffolding? How long will it be up there?
Scaffolding is necessary so the 70 plus full time workers can maintain and repair the building. Since work on the building is ongoing, the scaffolding likely will be up there for many decades or possibly centuries.
Built over a period of 600 plus years, starting in 1248 AD, the church spires top out at 515 ft. and it has the largest facade of any cathedral in Europe.
By law, no building in Cologne may be higher than the cathedral, so it will always be the tallest.
