This video is for those of you who have a broken LCD or those who want to upgrade their LCD from a LG Phillips (LP133WX2-TLC1/LP133WX2-TLC2) to the better black level/higher contrast AU Optronics ( B133EW04 V.3). It also helps if you want to convert the screen from glossy to matte.

Why: I just recently bought a water damaged Early 2009 macbook from ebay for $500. Once I cleaned the logic board and everything else in the case I booted it up and heard the power up noise. The laptop works, but the Inverter or LEDs were damaged by the incident. I did not want to go to Techrestore or Missionrepair, They cost way too much ($300-$400). I order a new LG Phillips screen from ebay for $150. The part should come in soon. Video updates will be available upon installation.

What: You need 2 things to get the glass off...

1. GPS suction cup (or any glass suction peripheral)
2. Thin Bendable Plastic, from misc. product packaging( in the video I used a xbox controller packaging plastic)

How: First, you place the suction cup on the top left corner of the screen. Apply force by holding on to the metal lid part and pulling gently....do not pull too hard or it will crack. After tugging a few times, there will be a small opening. take the sharp plastic and slide it downward toward the hinges.. do the rest of the sides as the video instructs.

To replace everything back together, You will need some Adhesive transfer tape. The specific one I ordered was this:

Place those accordingly... do not place them over the isight or the two modules to its right and left. TADA!! You just removed and replaced the glass without having any proof of doing so... Apple care still intact.

  • @sinfin19 : I myself did not use one, but I was extremely careful... And it took a while. I tried it on my gf's MacBook and it was Alot easier/faster. A simple blow dryer in the highest setting will do.

  • Hi!

Your video is very useful - i've got the same problem (lcd is black, macbook didnt get wet, but the lcd is dark [i think the led lights are damaged or the inverter] - ..so i've thought about replacing the lcd (original apple modell from ebay - around 120 $ with inverter and led backlight...) but i've thought also that would be very complicated. where can i get "such a thing"...which i can remove the glass? Is it called "suction pad"? can you send me the answer in a mail? very special thx

  • @Blade6de hey blade, The suction cup is actually from garmen, the GPS company.... its the one they use to mount gps units on your car windshield

  • well it void the warranty?

  • if you do this correctly, they cant tell if youve opened it.... so ill say no

  • can you please help me?

same thing happened to my computer. It got wet and everything works but the screen. Its verrrrrry dark.

is it possible it will dry and start working? please let me know!

  • @fopink hey man, what is most likely damaged is the logic board... u can try cleaning the circuitry around the video cable (when you open up the computer from the bottom, it will be in the top right corner .... it has a latch). Use isopropyl alcohol and dry it off with a pressurized air can. Good luck!

  • Cudi!

  • Can the glass then just lift straight out? Or is it hinged in?

  • Where did you get your tape? Also some of the black plastics on the edge are gone. Do you know if I can replace them?

  • @hoang352 yess , u cant tamper with anything.

  • Cheers Jermyjerm!

Quick question: can you distinguish broken glass from broken LCD without removing the glass?

  • Thanks for the info. The place I wanted to take my macbook wanted to charge me 650 to 700 to replace the screen. Thumbs up Jermyjerm

  • if you do this can you put the screen back'

  • They used to call me jeremy jerms back in elementary. lol
