i read a story in popular mechanics on mobil one when it first came out. the engineer said he rebuilt his engine wrote down all the specs after 100k mi tore it back down and spec'd it again said it was like it only had 10k mi. on it. i used it right away and it caused my new car to leak oil. i used syn oil in my harley (bought it used but rebuilt) 1st oil change and my gaskets started leaking. some mechanics say it shouldn't have but it didn't leak a drop until i changed to synthetic.

I put slick 50 in my car when it first came out. after i drove it for 30 min like they said, when i pulled back in my garage, my idle had gone up from 900 to 1200 so i adjusted the carb back to 900 and it stayed there. to me this meant it had less friction so i was saving gas by being able to idle back the carb. i used it in several cars, never had any problem.

And in ANY case, the INVENTOR of TEFLON for Dupont did in fact resign after the Slick 50 debacle. When you read the principles and applications of Teflon, it is crystal clear that it absoluetly CAN NOT work as an oil additive.

If you read the "white papers" from ANY brand of ANYTHING, they will show you that theirs is the best. There's a guy on here throwing out that Amsoil makes his TF motors last longer-well, it KILLED mine. It's all in the luck you had with it, just like different brands of cars and bikes. For ME, the Royal Purple consistently out-performs the competitors both in cooling and longetivity.

@HDfueler I use AMSOIL in everything I own. Become a preferred customer for $20 and 20W50 runs about 8 and change a quart. That is not " rediculously expensive" as KZ1000 said. No one's filters are more efficient and clean better. Remember, most oils are manufacture to run the recommended service interval, AMSOIL is made to exceed the recommended that interval. I run mine 7k because I can. Read their oil "White paper" 32 oils tested. I do not work for AMSOIL, I just know how well it works.

@cussedcreekforge You use it in your Peterbilt and your Harley? Works well on both tractors?

I've been building Harleys since I was 13, and I'm 45 now. Licensed aircraft tech, master certified, and a world speed record holder. I know more about oil than most of the engineers at Ashland. So, here's the scoop:
Slick 50 uses Teflon and claims it increases engine life. Problem with that is, the engineer who INVENTED Teflon for Dupont RESIGNED after they sold it to Slick 50 because it CANNOT work. You can find his report online dating around 1996.
Royal Purple is what I use now. Try it.

@KZ1300Rider take a look at the ultima syn oil. its pretty amazing oil.

Amsoil is what I use in everything, from the Peterbilt right down to my Harley. They make outstanding lubricants and I can buy Amsoil for my bike cheaper that H-D syn3. Filtration is key in extended component life. Amsoil filters are ahead of the game there too IMO.
I'm a certified harley tech and I own my own shop now I got tired of all the corporate bullshit. I have proof that H-D syn3 is actually a worse lubricant than their conventional oil. On that same subject AMS oil is rediculously expensive. From personal experience I suggest using Lucas or Royal Purple.

Slick 50 is not a "brand" of synthetic oil, it's an oil additive. When it was first introduced 30 years ago it actually had solid PTFE in suspension, which was not good for engines. It was basically snake oil with lots of unsubstantiated claims about what it could do.
While it's true that modern Slick 50 probably won't hurt your engine, any benefits from using it are dubious, IMO, and a waste of money.
