"Batter, my heart", from Doctor Atomic

Here's the end of Act 1 from John Adam's acclaimed opera Doctor Atomic: Oppenheimer's intense and exciting aria "Batter, my heart". It's wonderfully sung by baritone Gerald Finley (Amsterdam, 2007).

Unbearably touching is how I found the London performance last night.

I've just got back home from the ENO production. And he made me cry with this too... and again listening to it here.

Saw it last week in London. Truely one of the most spectacular productions I've ever seen

yes it's incredible - and make sure to read the sonnet on its own..aloud - it's simply astonishing text. Just Google "Batter my heart" and you will find the sonnets.

HowardFair - have you heard about the Metropolitan opera HD broadcast - they've been broadcasting live and pre-recorded performances into movie theatres all over the country. The tickets are $20 and because it's a movie theatre, you're sure to get closeup views of the action!

I kinda thought the same thing. Perhaps there's a correlation between the two settings or their meaning?

The $25 seats at the Met aren't even bad-- I almost prefer the family circle (which sometimes are low as $15) to the dress circle because of the beautiful openness and the ceiling-- it's not a bad view of the stage at all unless you get the obstructed view seats meant for the visually-impaired right at the sides of the stage
