My name is Shai Fredo. I am an Israeli actor born in Ethiopia. I have been involved with the performing arts for over ten years. In addition to acting, I write, produce, direct, sing and teach. Much of my work has been devoted to the Ethiopian community in order to tell their story using artistic expression.

My personal story started in a village called Matcha, in the mountains of northern Ethiopia:

My father owned a large farm, and by the age of 7, I was shepherding our small herd of goats and sheep. Our extended family of 18 left Ethiopia in 1983 and walked all the way to Sudan with our entire Jewish village, on our way to Israel. It was an exhausting 1 &1/2 month journey, traveling only at night in order to hide from robbers, animals, and Ethiopian soldiers.

After serving for three years in the Israeli army I decided to pursue my passion for acting, attending the premier acting schools in Israel. From1997 till 1999 I studied acting, voice, movement, and playwriting at The Visual Theatre School in Jerusalem. In my last year there, I was already working as an actor at The Hann Theatre, where I performed in many diverse roles for the following four years. From 2001 through 2004 I studied three years at the prestigious Nissan Nativ Actors Studio in Tel Aviv, graduating with honors.

My first big project with the Ethiopian community was the establishment of the first Ethiopian theater in Israel, Nattala Theater in Jerusalem, where I later became the theater manager. More recently, I wrote and produced the one man show "The Lion of Judah", an autobiographical story of my journey from Ethiopia and life in Israel. I perform this show all around Israel and especially at schools and army bases. In between I also had the opportunity to tour in the United States and Canada with an Ethiopian Israeli production, "One of a Kind", performing in Broadway, Toronto, and Seattle, among other locations.

If you are interested in viewing some of my work, below are several clips which can be seen on the internet. I would also be happy to send a full resume of my work as I feel these stories are important not only to share within Israel, but for the international audience.
