Ten years ago, I was working in a post production facility when one day a World War II vet. came in with some 8mm film he had taken during the war. He wanted the footage transferred to vhs, saying he wanted to get his footage, "out there" because there was some footage of Buchenwald in it. Some of us at work received vhs copies presumably in the interest of preserving a piece of history and in the spirit of getting the footage "out there."
There's only one shot of corpses at Buchenwald here and it isn't very well exposed and it doesn't reveal anything that we didn't know before. But the trip to Buchenwald may have some interesting elements to an historian.
Today one can drive from Marseille to Buchenwald in about 12 hours. Back then it was likely a 2 day trip, even with the German 4-lane "Super Highway." There were no such roads in America at the time. The super highway must have been a great help to the Allies; a fast way to get supplies in and out. Here, the war isn't even over & Hitler is still alive, yet truck loads of soldiers are already heading home.
The trip seems to be out of order in places. Also it seems, at some point he ran out of color film, so no color footage of the camp.
If anyone has the interest and time to spend, I'd like to know how to lay out the footage in the right order and maybe a map or description of the route taken. It would take someone who has a familiarity with the terrain and possibly some knowledge of the history of road construction in France & Germany. Also, where are the locations filmed here? What cities and towns are shown?

You wouldnt by chance know who this vet was? It would be amazing to get his story in words and perhaps put it with this video

@phatbman I was hoping someone would recognize the footage and claim it or be able to identify the guy.
