Before installing a hidden fence system, we had a 6' tall stockade fence with chicken wire buried at the bottom to prevent digging under. We had many more breakouts and problems with the ugly fence than with our hidden fence system. They can't dig under or jump over the hidden fence system. For us, the hidden fence system look better, let us give the dogs run of more of the yard, and protects our pets better.

Electric fences may actually encourage animals to try to escape. Since dogs only suffer painful shocks in the yard, they might associate the shock with the yard itself—once they get out of the yard, the pain goes away. The fact that the pain returns when they try to re-enter the yard can cause dogs to believe that they are being punished for returning home.

@MsLabMom We appreciate your comment, but with the proper training and positive reinforcement by the owner before turning the dog loose in the containment area, dogs understand to respect the warning beep that precedes the static correction. It shouldn't have to correct the dog more than a couple times before the dog learns not to go beyond that warning. Static is not meant to hurt the dog, it is only meant to distract them. Most fences are now made so they do not correct the dog upon re-entry.
