Re the closeup, you have to remember that will and crying dont mix in the film, thus when you can see the tears at first here, it comes as a surprise. a close-up might have forced the tearing up too much.
Also, this is the climax of the film (coupled with robin williams argument with the professor leading up to this). Thus if the crying was cut short, it wouldnt have felt as climactic coz you wouldn't be able to sit back and absorb on what just happened.
Respectfully disagree because I still have respect for what you wrote. You're one of the rare people out there that actually takes the time to analyse the directing, and I think that's great. Feel free to disagree with what I wrote though and make a comment if you wish!
First, I want to say that I know what you mean about the makers wanting this scene to be dramatic seeing that it's the climax in the film. To me this scene also resembles the turning point in Will's character where he finally stops being the victim of his inner demons and starts taking charge of his life. Ergo, I wish the crying wasn't so sudden. It was definitely a surprise but I felt that audiences were being forced/pushed into believing that Will had finally come to terms with his past.
Do you watch Grey's? At the end of S2, there's a scene where Izzie breaks down when Denny dies. That scene is remembered to be one of the key moments in the entire show. Izzie's character underwent a huge change after. I think that scene was not only surprising and powerful, but it was done in a way that viewers felt like they were captured in the moment. That truly felt like a climax to me. Understand and respect your opinion too. Meeting someone like you who agrees to disagree is a rarity.
