Do these type trains go on regular tracks that freight trains go on??
-
when I heard this high pitch whistle at KC Union Station I cringed that deep throated SP whistle is the best one not that highpitch one OUCH it is really close to the Chineese ones I heard in regular service(coal mines with SYs) in November when they wernt blowing the damn airhorn I miss this steamer we lost her on Rich Mountain outside of Heavner when we were doing run to New Orleans and had to go in with the diesel only a real disapointment
-
yah I was wrong it sounds more like a whistle on the SY class 2-8-2 locomotives
-
hmm ok I havnt seen one live yet I go to China in November and ride behind two of the survivers there I was just basing that on the ones I heard in the videos I have seen on here that whistle greated us when we arrived in KC that year for the New Orleans trip we had private cars on the rear of that trip I definatlly prefer the SP 6 chime whistle we had to shut the engine down in an emergancy to save the boiler when a dealer gave bad fuel to them in Heavner Oklahoma
-
Well It has a much higher sound then the QJ whistle but it sounds the same.
-
wow I didnt know that high pitch one was chineese but hearing in now I can definatlly tell it is it sounds like it is off a QJ class 2-10-2...I believe this was the whistle we had on there when we did the trip from KC to New orleans that resulted in the tragic loss of the steam engine outside Heavner Oklahoma....but that is a Damn shame to hear someone stole the origional SP whistle
-
The Whistle that you hear is a Chinse Steam Whistle that our Association had during the SP745's Trip, Sadly about two years ago someone broke into the yard and stole the whistle of the 745. We are still trying to find the Thief.

Woah, what kind of whistle is the higher pitched one? It almost sounds like a CB&Q chime but I can't tell.
Yes, they do run on regular freight lines.
However, this particular engine rarely runs. The next big run is tentative for April 2012. See lasta.org for more updated info. Also read the engineer's blog for a summary of this trip from his perspective. This particular trip started in New orleans in April 2005. It is at the top of page 2.
Other steam engines run regularly like the Union pacific 844 and 3985. Their schedule for each is posted on UPRR.com early in the spring.

I was a member of theLASTA crew on this part of the trip. I rode the rear of the train from Delhi to Vicksburg. I was supposed to get off at Jackson, but lost my voice at Vicksburg. I am on the left side of the JEFFERSON shooting my own video, Ke Cotton from the Austin Steam Train Assn was my rear companion on the back platform. All together I have about two hours of video from Delhi to Jackson, Hammond, LA to Baton Rouge and points south. Hope to get it digitalized sometime soon.

That was an awesome show of sights and sounds from the ground, but I can't wait to see your footage from the train. You guys did an awesome job putting this run together. I was reading again the series of obstacles on the LASTA webpage just a couple of days ago. I can't state appreciations enough for all the work that was involved. I also heard bits and pieces of the "adventure" at Shreveport. I hope there will be more runs in the future, so more people and kids can see it.
