Here I am (Mark Chang) playing a mix of 1920's dance music on an old 1920's era Hamilton upright piano. You may recognize "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue" in there among other tunes. I'm playing unusually fast here, just for kicks. Feel free to dance around your living room. You just may cut a rug for real. Honky Tonk piano. Recorded in Woodland, CA. March-April 2007. Pardon the long hair- I was too lazy to go out and get it trimmed. Be sure to check my channel often as I will be uploading more piano videos as I find time to compile them.

This is the chord arrangement I'm playing here- it's pretty simple:

Verse1: C - E7 - A7 - D7 - G7 - C6 - G7
Verse2: C - E7 - A7 - D7 - G7 - C - F - C
Bridge: E7 - A7 - D7 - G7

Note that the real Charleston has more parts to it than what I'm doing here. I sometimes play the other parts too, but decided to play just the abridged version here.

  • how did you learn!? i want to learn ragtime so bad but i dont know where to look! this is amazing

  • I'm self taught. I started by figuring out basic chords, then creating a left hand riff and letting the right hand play melody and supporting chords. Within a month or two I was playing this kind of simplified (but fun) ragtime-inspired music. That was 25 years ago. It's really all in the ear- you gotta love it to play it.
