  • @zbrownie25 You said it. 40 years ago Terfel would have been a joke. He is a caricature of the great baritones of the past.

  • @rickshawsonson Bryn Terfel always does that. He drastically opens vowels and shoves them in his nose. It sounds horrible. What's good about Bryn Terfel is that he brought lots of people into liking opera. What's bad is that people think his is a quite normal "singing technique". Listen to the the baritones of some time ago. By God, that "car avec les soldats" in the beginning is above and beyond ugly.

  • @DanyNicola I'm pretty sure that's cuz it's a french vowel, but I haven't yet studied this aria.

  • @spyridon77 His "singing technique" has to be very wrong. 0:27 is nasally and horrible. Nobody has ever applied this "singing technique".

  • this is a very poor example of escamillo. Screaming......Escamillo needs to be more balanced, in charge, and dignified

  • Terfel is a wonderful singer and spectacular in many roles, but he is not my choice for an Escamillo. His voice is far too heavy and instead of delivering a story telling version, he ends up seeming like the villain, which Escamillo is not. I also think that the orchestra and chorus were fairly emotionless, the balance was shocking, and there was nothing special at all about this performance. The Toreador aria is a dynamic scene, not a work for concert. It should be seen, not just heard.
