@DWcriticism in a court of law against what charge? freedom of speech? if i was going to service my electric panel i would prefer to do so knowing i wouldn't face the equivalent of an electric chair. granted in most places your electric company will unlock the meter for you. However for situations where your options are limited, i think this is a helpful video.

Slide the meter out its like a big fuse with prongs that hold it in, theres 2 plastic covers the slide over the prongs to break contact, take those off, on back of meter ull see a piece off copper bout 1/4 in. By 1 in. With a screw at both ends, loosen those, slide piece of copper away from one of the screws ....installl ....now u have power without the meter reading it!

Fuck....I had to steal power today for the weekend because my chick never paid her bill. I have a baby girl I don't want sick in this cold and its fucking bs that an electrician like me can't even find a pinchi job in my state. Fuck letting my 8month old freeze

HEY,OU GOT ANY IDEAS FOR ELECTRONIC METERS-DIGITAL,THAT THEY READ AUTOMATICALLY FROM THE OFFICE ? THEY HAVE THE OLD STYLE WIRE LOOPS IN PLASTIC. mrpanman65

I really don't intend to steal power but I need to take the ring off to change out the panel. I don't want to pay the power company to come out, disconnect, then reinstall - not to mention $300 plus for a permit from the county.

Very good advice, thanx.

@hvacman91 That's why they put lock rings on them now, so people don't steal the meter. If your going to steal power, the meter socket is the last place you'd want to do it. Unless you know exactly when the meter reader comes by. By the way I've been a journeyman for 33 years.

@joebananatube i'm out of south central PA and yes the meter socket is home owner property BUT the METER and METER SEAL or any device used to lock up or prevent tampering of the meter is the property of the power provider you cant touch them if everyone was allowed to take their meter seal off and have full access to the meter people would be stealing power like crazy that's why it's on there and for the safety of the public
RIGHT, NOT TO DO IT ILLEGALY...So, looks like I'm going to be getting some free juice.

I used a 2" dry wall screw, but nothing happened. any suggestions?

@iconsagain you may have a new style pin that's one solid piece. Make sure you use a pair of vise grips to keep the pin from spinning. Good luck.
