In 1992 Jeremy Brett - rightly hailed as a great interpreter (by many as *the* interpreter) of Sherlock Holmes - made some very ludicrous "adaptations" of Conan Doyle stories, namely "The Eligible Bachelor", "The Last Vampyre" and this one. Mostly, they bore very little resemblance to the Canon, and even Brett failed to give Holmes the right spirit. However, Robert Hardy's monstrous and slimy Charles Augustus Milverton, "the worst man in London", was the second best villain in Brett's series (Eric Porter's Moriarty being on top).
Stage actor Hardy, who became world famous as Siegfried Farnon in "All Creatures Great And Small", was seen recently as Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter movies.
The second in my "Napoleons of Crime" series. ;)
And here a picture of Milverton drawn by Sidney Paget: http://sherlockholmesbr.vilabol.uol.com.br/ca_mil_01.jpeg
