  • @speirso Mine won't be sold as its is useful for using as reference to draw obscure shapes, my main issue is that it is advertised as a time saver for reverse engineering objects but in reality it saves no time at all and the end solid model still must be drawn manually. Before buying a refurb make absolutely sure that it has the full support.

  • @andyarceye ahh good, thats what i was hoping for, if the david scanner came with sort of rotary engine instead of moving by hand or having to make something id probably go with it,

looks like im back on with the buying,

they are selling refurbished ones on ebay, for around £300 cheaper with full support from nextengine,

ill probably get one of those

or are you planning on selling yours?

thanks for answering all thes questions for me

  • @speirso Yes files can be saved as .obj files, and with all my ranting I should have really asked what you wanted to use it for. For your purpose it will do an excellent good job as you can work directly with mesh files. By cleaning I mean removing the noise from the scan (it scans more than just the object, the scan includes parts of the holding platform).

  • @andyarceye

what do yo mean by cleaning?

i want to use it to get a high poly model to then bake on to a low poly model, im a games modeller, and this would was save me time for some objects,

i use zbrush, autocad and 3ds max, can you save the scanned file as an obj or a type that can be used for these?

  • @speirso Yes I have the HD version, the scan data in raw format is very good after spending a lot of time cleaning the then fusing the individual scans together. If you want to just save the file as something like STL then it is fine. I find it best to scan the object and use the scanned data as a references to model a usable cad model. Corners, edges and holes are never clearly defined enough to be usable. David Laser for £300 gives similar results with a stepper driving the laser.

  • @speirso would you recommend the david laser scanner then?

  • @andyarceye

oh right, thanks for that, is that for the hd version too?

ive seen some objects scanned with this and they look amazing?

so id be better off just sticking to modelling objects with autocad and 3ds max? with photo references then,

thanks youve just saved me £2000,

  • @speirso I have 1 for work to scan obscure objects for reverse engineering. After 6 months of scanning 100's of different items the results vary from reasonable to unusable.

If the object being scanned has any edge or surface that can be used as a datum then its faster and more accurate to manually measure.

The results of this scanner are no better than the £300 david laser scanner.

Scanners from Zcorp and other companies such as thinglab are way more expensive for a reason.

  • @andyarceye

tell me more, do you have one? what are they like?

im saving up to buy one, should have enough in may,

  • @speirso Don't bother you will waste your money
