I'm uploading videos showing the lyric side of Sutherland's career, which, unfortunately, is sometimes underestimated. Even if Joan Sutherland was indeed a legendary coloratura phenomenon, she was also a supreme singer in lyric roles and lyric arias in other roles, always demonstrating a very subtle, elegant and expressive phrasing and her lush and rounded middle register.

In this video the "Koloraturwunder" shows off her ability to sing delicate or long lyrical lines and powerful dramatic passages with extreme beauty, in a large range. As I said before, I doubt anyone who listen to this could still think of her as a "mere" coloratura phenomenon or an insufficiently expressive singer. The excerpts are from:

1) "Selig, wie die Sonne" from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, in English [1957, live]
2) Extract from Euryanthe-Eglantine's duet "So einsam bangend find' ich dich", from Weber's Euryanthe [1955, live, with Marianne Schech]
3) "Ocean, thou mighty monster", from Weber's Oberon [1963, studio]
4) "Einsam in trüben Tagen", from Wagner's Lohengrin [1979, studio]
5) "Die Loreley", lied by Liszt [1960, broadcast]
6) "Und ob die Wolke sie verhülle", from Weber's Der Freischütz [1964, studio]
7) The Last Rose of Summer from Flotow's Martha [1966, studio]
8) Hanna's Entrance from Lehár's The Merry Widow, in English [1978, studio]
9) "O Madonna, auf uns sieh", the Nuns' Chorus, from J. Strauss II's Casanova [1966, studio]
10) "Im Chambre separée" from Heuberger's Der Opernball [1966, studio]

  • I uploaded this video again because the previous one had a problem with the sinchronization between the images and the sound. :-)
