In August 1994, the contract for the design and construction of the Ting Kau Bridge and Approach Viaduct was awarded by the Hong Kong Highways Department to Ting Kau Contractors Joint Venture (TKC), comprising Grupo Acciona S.A. (Spain), Downer and Company Ltd. (Hong Kong), Paul Y. Construction Co. Ltd. (Hong Kong) and Ed. Züblin AG (Germany).
The design of this new landmark for Hong Kong was carried out by Schlaich Bergermann und Partner (Germany) in joint venture with Binnie Consultants Ltd. (Hong Kong).
38 months after the Ground Breaking Ceremony in February 1995, the bridge was opened to traffic in May 1998.
With a total cable supported length of 1,177m, the Ting Kau Bridge ranks amongst the longest cable stayed bridges in the world. This documentary follows the project through all phases, from design and wind tunnel testing to breath taking heavy lifting operations and record breaking deck erection.
