WikiLeaks: Russia was Trying to Blow Up Georgia
2010-12-02
Russia was carrying out a 'secret operation' in order to 'blow up' Georgia in August 2008, WikiLeaks materials say. The Russian hostile activities in Georgia included murders and rocket attacks. Russia was providing separatists in South Ossetia and Abkhazia with arms.
According to the WikiLeaks materials, Russian secret services were also releasing misinformation regarding pro-NATO, pro-US Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. The materials include a diplomatic telegram from John Tefft, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia.
The telegram, sent to Washington and dated from 20 August, 2007, says: 'for the last few years Russia has been aggressive towards Georgia. The aim of the Kremlin was to overturn Saakashvili and change of Euro-Atlantic orientation of Georgia'.
John Tefft also talks about the initiator of the August war in the telegram. The ambassador shares the opinion of Saakashvili who claims he had to react to the Russian provocation as he did not have any other choice.
According to Tefft, Russian FSS fully controlled so-called South Ossetia. Tefft says George Bush's administration was calling on Saakashvili to act with restraint for several months.
