Kibera residents reacted to the governments proposed plan to offer poor families cash through M-Pesa instead of food aid. It wasnt the concept, or the way the program will work, but the amount of money that had some worried. Cynthia Vukets reports.

  • kenyashould never adopt the welfare handout system ever!!its the same system that was introduced to help(imprison)the blacks and decades later, they are lazy, incompetent and un-innovative people!!! it seems good for now but down the lines, kenyans will weep!!!...create jobs!give small loans.,,,encourage competition, give tax breaks for small business, financial freedom and create a corruption free environment...and build a reliable network of communication and transport then sit back n watch!!!

  • Mama I think you are fine ugali na sukuma alafu githeri na maharagwe. ngozi yako imenyooka kama mwezi.

  • It can never be enough especially if its free. A better approach is GoK issues vouchers that can be redeemed for Food items ONLY and in reputable outlets! 1,500 cash is good for seasonal drinking spree...Bring it on!

  • People are misunderstanding the programme because Raila has not explained to them that the KSH 1500 food subsidy is supposed to supplement their monthly food requirement and not serve as a replacement for their daily endeavour to realize their own food entitlement. So long as the food subsidy is tagged to appeasing an eloctatorate its misuse is given. By the way, where is this money coming from? Is it tax payers money?

  • So far PM has come up with some noble ideas such as the Kazi kwa Vijana and now this. Problem is all these are pipe dreams because while the money is disbursed, somewhere along the line it gets embezzled and with records being entered by hand anyone can forge a recipient's signature. Electronic transfers perhaps?

  • it is a good programm if it is meant to be temporary. jobs jobs jobs. the adult in kenya needs to think and think seriously about the future of kenya. there are a few people within the government who are taking more than enough of the resources and leave the poor with nothing. it is about time corruption be eradicated and have the resources invested so that jobs are created and people can then be employed and they will be able to feed themselves. good job highliting this cynthia
