This is an extremely well-acted scene. Notice that Ruth Chatterton purposely does not convey sincerity in her affections for Cort; instead, she conveys the insecurity of a woman facing getting older.

I had also forgotten (but see the link to the clip here) that she was in Tarzan and the Amazons. Her casting in "The Wolfman" was such a stroke of genius. Who else could play with mother of Bela?!!!
