For this second Dajos Bela video I opted for a very happy foxtrot by the prolific American composer Harry Warren - creator of "I only have eyes for you", "We're in the money", "Chattanooga Choo Choo" and many other classics of the American songbook. The label on this Odeon release is French and the title has been translated. I was unable to come up with the original English title until user Muscleco provided me with the correct English title - "Sing a little jingle". This song was featured in the Broadway production Billy Rose's Crazy Quilt... Billy Rose was a producer, showman and lyricist co-writing songs such as "Me and my shadow", "Great Day" and "It's only a paper moon".... He also produced the legendary musical "Jumbo" in 1935

About the video :

Today was the last day of the summer holiday in Belgium (lasting 2 months : july & august)... From tomorrow onwards schools will reopen and the government - or rather governments -and the administrations will return to work.... In France and the French speaking part of Belgium they have a word for it which sums it up perfectly : "La rentrée" (the return).

So for this video I would like to offer a nostalgic look back at summer holidays of days long gone....

It is a quick trip through 2 popular Belgian beach resorts : Blankenberge and Oostende (Ostend(e))... Blankenberge was the first to cater to mass tourism (benefitting from a direct rail link from major cities)? This earned it a somewhat tacky reputation... A lot of efforts have been made in recent years to rebrand this resort... Oostende on the other hand is the self proclaimed "Queen of seaside resorts" - since this is where the royal family used to spend its holidays...

Most of the buildings in the pictures are long gone... The luxury hotels or "palaces" - which they truly were - have been demolished and replaced by high rise appartment buildings... I remember seeing many of these former palaces in a delapidated state when I was a child... One of the last former luxury hotels to be demolished was the "Hotel Bristol" (to be seen from 0:55 to 1:08)....

The Casino in Oostende with its elegant interiors was demolished as well and replaced by a modern building (ca 1946).

All pictures from personal collection.

Danke! Da kommt gute Laune auf!
