This is so fucking ironic it makes the already saddening NGE, a soul-haunting experience, and a marvelous one. So sad they only put out crappy childish fan-service animes nowadays.

This. I watched this series for the first time years ago, and this part still haunts me. So tragic and disturbingly beautiful.

@coreyadams25 I agree that something (other than mechanical setting and 3D tech etc.) is better in the Rebuild series, but I still prefer the old series particularly because of this movie ending, though I watched the rebuild even earlier.
The old series 'stops time' like never in any FILM else.
