Coming to teach at Taipei Medical University beginning in September 2007, I discovered that, although we are in the shadow of Taipei 101, the worlds tallest building for the time being and the pride of Taiwans modern economic development, the area around the university is virtually a time-capsule of past decades, as well as people largely left behind in the economic advances.

Nearby are other unique historical remnants: The graveyards and temples on the hills surrounding the university provide physical evidence of significant events in Taiwans history of the last hundred years, especially the massive disruptions of 1945-55. That is, the Chinese civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists ravaged the lives of millions, and in 1949 spawned a huge exodus of refugees that transformed Taiwan.
