early in world war 2, Japanese airborne troops jumped armed with pistols and grenades, and their rifles and machine guns were dropped separately in containers. In order to allow paratroopers to keep their rifles with them, a rifle was developed that could be taken apart into 2 parts, which could be carried in a pouch during the jump. After a couple of prototypes, the Type 2 was issued and used by both Army and Navy airborne units. The Type 2 is based on the Type 99 and is similar to it except the added take-down feature. However, by this stage in the war, most Japanese airborne attacks were carried out by landing the transport planes at the target.

  • I have one! It's was brought back by my Dad's Uncle after the war! I have never fired it. I recently found some ammo for it at a $1.00 per round!

  • @meandean222 You're lucky, I had to pay $1200 for mine, and that was back in the 90s.

  • what caliber bullet does that thing take?

  • @hexcollectors101 7.7mm Japanese (7.7x58mm Arisaka)

  • Nice rifle! I had to tear down a barn to get mine [as payment]. The rifle was captured by a paratrooper from the 11th Abn in the Philipines. The ammo is easier to get, or make from .308 I think.

  • @Shep0815 , As a kid I took that baby apart and put it back together so many times, I probably could have done blind folded. Right now, it's locked in an antique Secretary I've been looking for the key for since I bought the ammo! I've found a site that sells the most common skeleton keys for around $40.00. I can't wait much longer so I'm going to go for!

  • @deaddollzombies LOL you could easily sell that thing for around 2000.

  • Don't see many of the paratrooper take downs

I got mine a few years ago from a guy at a flea market. I asked him what he wanted for it and he said he paid $100 for it but make an offer. I said $75 and he said OK....Pretty funny

Mum not ground and came with it's bayonet , unfortunatly no sling but I made a repo one out of a Swedish leather sling and a snap

  • Tennou heika banzai to!

  • Nice I have type 38 and a type 99
