How the Body Works Brain Patterns and Sleep

This graph shows the stages of the depth of sleep against the hours of sleep. During the night the depth of sleep increases and decreases in cycles. The cycles gradually becomes less deep, until the sleeper wakes. Periods of rapid eye movements, or REM, between Stage IV and Stage I sleep indicate dreaming. Each sleep stage has a characteristic electroencephalogram with wave patterns of different heights and frequencies.
