The idea is to encourage a central leader. With apple and pear trees, you'll want a central leader branch to encourage new growth and fruit development.

  • Very useful advice. I'am trying to prune a young apple tree in my first ever garden for the first time I found the tree full of fruit buds but no leaf buds the temp here in London is still very low should I leave the buds ? will they bear fruit ?
