Here is probably the rarest Phil Spector gem ever generated! It is Please Be My Boyfriend by The Crystals. This tune is actually the last part of a 10 minute demo track which exists. Little is known about this track. This number became widely known by a photograph of a studio track sheet in "The Girl Groups" written by Alan Betrock, but the details of the number are unknown almost at all, probably because it is an incomplete number rather than because it is unpublished one. Spector had little interest in The Crystals at the time, since he was focusing on his other groups The Ronettes and The Righteous Brothers. What most likely happened is that The Crystals were frustrated that they were getting no more sessions, so he made this session to pacify them. He never intended this for release. According to the infamous track sheet, this recording was made in 1964. The tone of the recording leads most to believe it is a Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich composition. Unfortunately, none of these details are known. Maybe one day these questions will be answered. Until then, listen to this wonderful song. Enjoy!

  • will someone please be my boyfriend mine broke up with me

  • When I first heard this song, I thought it was Barbara Alston, because of the NYC twang in the lead singer's voice. There is a version by the Lovelites, but this is not it, although the backing tracks are the same. I knew, though, that I've heard this lead before. The group is The Orchids (That Boy Is Messing Up My Mind). They are also the group who sang the demo for "Some Of Your Lovin'", released as The Honeybees on Fontana.

  • Nice song, but definitely not La La Brooks!

  • The track is not either one but the same music track was used for both the Lovelites and this Crystals version. This video contains a picture of an acetate from a defunct (early 60's) Los Angeles studio, Gold Star, and it has The Crystals named as the artist.

  • This track is not by The Crystals. It is by The Lovelites. It was written and produced by Vincent Poncia and Peter Andreoli for Phil Spector Productions.

  • superbe!

  • Ive been a Crystals fan for years but ive never heard of this song was it ever released as a single ?

I saw the Crystals on there first UK tour with Joe Brown

  • Seems like this may have been designed for Darlene's voice. La La is fabulous, but she's a thunderbolt whose voice was more suited for stormers like DDRR and Then He Kissed Me and Little Boy ...

  • That instrumental beginning was perfect then Spector takes Crystals into the wrong direction IMO. Ah well, they CALLED Spector a genius, who am I?

  • hearing this again, its so perfect for the chiffons
