William Kroll will always best be remembered as the composer of "Banjo & Fiddle", however he was a noted violinist in his own right but made only a few recordings. In Charles Turner's Serenade for Icarus he is accompanied by Grant Johannesen
After listening to this and seeing the comment below, I checked my LP collection. I have a recording of the Kroll Quartet playing two Mozart quartets, the Hunt and Dissonant, on allegro records. The liner notes say: "Wm Kroll is a native New Yorker. He studied with Henri Marteau at the Royal Conservatory in Berlin and with Franz Kneisel at the Institute of Musical Arts in NY . . . . His violin is an Antonio Stradivarius, 1709, Ex-Ernst."
Great recording. My father studied piano with Louis Kroll in New York in the 1930's/40's. I think L. Kroll was Wm Kroll's brother. Louis Kroll passed his sheet music collection on to my father, including original chamber music pieces from late 19th C/early 20th C and violin-piano pieces from the library of Gustav L. Kroll. I assume all 3 Krolls are related. Anyone know the family tree? See second comment below.
Thank you for making this recording available. Very interesting for me! My old teacher mentioned W. Kroll sometimes, because they both studied at the same time in the class of Henri Marteau in Berlin.
